We are seeking to recruit a Head of International Commercial Development to assist in the development and delivery of a sponsorship, partnership and marketing expansion strategy to allow Southampton Football Club to move into Asian markets, particularly China. You will focus on identifying revenue generating opportunities in China and ways for the Club to begin to grow as a commercial entity in that market and more widely in Asia.
Your research and recommendations will allow development and implementation of an overseas commercial activity strategy. You will work closely with our sales, marketing and sponsorship teams in order to understand current internal strategies and challenges. You will use this analysis to evaluate how effective our engagement strategies are for growth in Chinese and Asian markets and research alternative methods that may build our commercial activities.
This role will work closely with the Head of International Sporting Business Development to align the sporting and commercial strategies. You will also act as an effective interface between commercial teams based in China, building and maintaining effective working relationships with the Club’s shareholder group in China and Hong Kong.
What are we looking for?
In order to be successful in this role, you will need to be a fluent Mandarin speaker and have experience in leading commercial development projects in Asia. The successful candidate will be confident building relationships with internal stakeholders and external commercial agencies in order to identify new opportunities. You will also need to be comfortable travelling internationally on a regular basis.
The competencies which are required include:
Experience in leading commercial, infrastructure, corporate or strategic development projects in Asia and China.
Worked closely with local authorities in China or another similar Asian market.
Experience of current trends and technologies in marketing.
Experience of work on building partnerships and effective external relationships with key stakeholders.
Working knowledge of sports sponsorship, marketing and sales.
Close practical knowledge of working in an elite-level sporting entity.
Experience of working within the commercial or strategic teams of a football club, sporting organisation or governing body in the UK or Asia.
Experience of work with emerging technologies and market innovations such as E-Sports etc.
Previous work on brand development in Asia.
Essential Qualifications (including certifications):
Educated to degree level or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications (including certifications):
Relevant commercial or professional qualifications.
Fluent Mandarin speaker.
Strong commercial mindset and focus. Able to proactively identify opportunities for immediate or future development.
Able to build effective strategies and plans to cover development over 1 year, 3 year and 5 year periods.
Confident of working with senior executives, shareholders and external stakeholders.
Strong analytical skills. Able to interpret a wide range of information and use their findings to make proposals.
Good communication and interpersonal skills to influence of senior management and shareholders.
Effective problem-solver and able to think creatively to evaluate information and apply findings to different environments.
